The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged Kenyans to prepare for continued rainfall in the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley this week.
A weekly forecast for May 14 to May 20 indicates that sunny intervals will prevail in the morning in these regions, with a probability of light rains over a few places.
“Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places. Nights are likely to be partly cloudy but occasional showers may occur over a few places,” Meteorological Services Director David Gikungu said.
In North-western Kenya, sunny intervals are expected during the day while nights are likely to be partly cloudy.
The weather forecast further indicates that the highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, will experience cloudy mornings, breaking into sunny intervals.
Occasional afternoon and night showers are expected over a few places.
In north-eastern Kenya, sunny intervals will prevail during the day, accompanied by cloudy nights.
The south-eastern lowlands will have sunny intervals and partly cloudy nights while in the Coast region, sunny intervals are expected during the day while nights are likely to be partly cloudy.
“However, occasional morning and afternoon showers may occur over a few places,” the forecast indicates.
Meanwhile, high average daytime temperatures of more than 30°C will be experienced in most parts of the Coast, north-eastern and north-western Kenya while average night-time temperatures of less than 10°C will prevail in some parts of the eastern Rift Valley highlands.
The latest fair-weather conditions follow weeks of heavy downpours in many parts of the country which caused devastating floods, killing over 277 people and displacing over 113,000 households.
