Ousted Migori County Assembly Speaker Charles Owino Likoa has received a sigh of relief after a Labour court sitting in Kisumu issued an order stopping the House from replacing him pending the hearing of a case.
The order was issued on Tuesday by Justice Stephene Radido of the Kisumu Employment and Labour Relations Court after Mr. Likoa filed the case challenging his impeachment.
Migori County Assembly, which is the respondent in the case, has been given seven days to respond to the petition filed by the embattled Speaker on April 30, 2024.
The reprieve for Likoa comes at a time when Migori Members of County Assembly (MCAs) had already elected Kaler Ward MCA Thomas Akungo as the Acting Speaker.
Mr. Akungo was also elected on Tuesday after the court had issued orders stopping current Deputy Speaker Mathews Chacha from taking up the position of Acting Speaker.
Mr. Likoa was impeached last week by the MCAs who claimed that he could not account for finances at the County Assembly and that he was unable to offer good leadership.
The impeachment motion was unanimously passed by 59 out of 60 MCAs present during the April 23, 2024 session.
