The Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA) has come out to condemn Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya for allegedly threatening to kill a magistrate who ordered him to pay a businessman Ksh.500,000 in debt.
The association, in a statement to newsrooms signed by its President Derrick Kuto on Wednesday, labelled the actions as “stinking” and out of order considering the office Salasya holds.
Mr. Kuto further called out the lawmaker saying, after issuing threats to the magistrate, he went on to post cryptic information about the incident online.
“We wish to condemn the careless, Precambrian, and pedestrian action by Salasya in the strongest terms possible. He is a disgrace to this nation. He has lowered the value of the office that he occupies,” said the KMJA boss in the statement.
Mr. Kuto decried the vulnerable state that judges and magistrates find themselves in, stating that the incident in question is not isolated.
“Many of our members have been harmed and killed in line of duty while others have had to resign. Therefore, an attack on anyone of us is an attack on all of us,” he added.
The KMJA President hence called for the speedy conclusion of investigations involving the lawmaker, adding that he should be subjected to the full brunt of the law for being a “bad entity for the society.”
“We hope that the government of Kenya, through its agencies, including the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, will understand our daily cries for the provision of security to our members,” he said.
Magistrate Gladys Kiama of the Kakamega Small Claims Court had on Monday directed Salasya to pay Robert Lutta a Ksh.500,000 debt with interest and cost of the case after the businessman filed a case claiming he lent the legislator the money on December 13, 2022, with the agreement that he would repay after two months.
It is reported that the Parliamentarian then followed the Magistrate outside the courtroom and threatened to kill her, with the incident being reported to the Kakamega Police Station.
