A manhunt is currently underway for Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa after he allegedly branded a Constituency Development Fund (CDF) vehicle with United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party colours and used it for political campaigns.
The legislator, who is looking to defend his seat at the August polls, is said to have illegally fitted the vehicle with his campaign posters as well as those of Deputy President William Ruto.
Barasa is also accused of illegally changing the number plate of the said vehicle from GK948J to KBS 709 D, which is said to belong to one of his brother’s vehicles.
Sleuths now want to charge Barasa, who has allegedly gone into hiding, with forgery and theft of a government vehicle.
Kimilili sub-county Senior Superintendent of Police Mwita Maroa said the vehicle was recovered from Barasa’s residence in Nasianda village following a tip-off from concerned constituents who saw the vehicle doing rounds in the area.
The legislator was reportedly not home at the time and, despite reportedly being denied access to the premises by his employees, police were eventually able to get into the compound.
The sleuths called the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to confirm if the vehicle was registered in Barasa’s name.
“We took the initiative to go to the CDF offices but did not find it there, so we proceeded to his home where we found it,” Maroa told the Nation.
"We did this in a joint operation involving officers from the government vehicles check unit officers from Nairobi, Serious Crimes Unit and Directorate of Criminal Investigations from Nairobi and Kimilili.”
When reached for comment, Barasa however allegedly labelled the incident as being politically motivated by his rivals.
