Kibabii University Suspends Learning And Sends Students Home

Kibabii University has suspended teaching and learning activities for the first semester of the 2026/2027 academic year following student unrest at the institution.

In a statement, the university announced that the decision was reached by the Senate during a special meeting held on Tuesday, October 6, with the suspension taking effect immediately.

 

"The University Senate in its Special Meeting held today, Tuesday, 6th October 2026, resolved to suspend the 1st Semester 2026/2027 Academic Year activities following the student unrest with immediate effect," the statement read.

 

Following the decision, the university directed all students to vacate the institution's premises immediately, with the deadline set for 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. 

Students living in the university's hostels were also directed to leave the accommodation facilities by the same deadline as the institution implemented the suspension.

 

The university further advised students who reside in the neighbourhood of the institution to make alternative accommodation arrangements until teaching and learning activities resume.

 This comes days after the University of Nairobi (UoN) addressed claims circulating online that the institution had announced a temporary closure following the commencement of a lecturers’ industrial strike.

The claims indicated that the university would close on Friday, October 2, and that students would be required to leave the institution and make arrangements to return at a later date.

 

According to the circulating memo, students were also instructed to take their personal belongings with them and remain in contact with the university’s official communication channels for further updates.

However, in an update, the University of Nairobi dismissed the communication, warning students and other members of the public against relying on the memo being shared across different platforms.

 

The university issued a brief response to clarify the status of the purported closure notice.

"Kindly take note that this memo circulating in different platforms is fake," the update read.

Prior to that, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) dismissed a memo circulating on social media claiming that the university had suspended academic activities ahead of a planned lecturers’ industrial action.

The fake memo claimed that the university had temporarily suspended academic activities following the planned lecturers’ strike scheduled to begin on Friday, October 2.

According to the circulating memo, all students had been directed to vacate the university campus by October 2, secure their personal belongings and return home.

 

The memo further claimed that students had been advised to await further communication through official university channels regarding the resumption of academic activities.

However, MMUST dismissed the communication as fake, urging students and other members of the university community to disregard it.
