John Mativo Sacked as KETRACO MD, Kipkemoi Kibias Appointed Acting Boss

Kipkemoi Kibias has been appointed as the Acting Managing Director of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO), effective September 19, 2025.

In a statement released on Friday by KETRACO, the Board of Directors announced the appointment following consultations with the Chief of Staff, Head of Public Service, and the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.

The appointment comes as the state corporation continues to expand Kenya's high-voltage electricity transmission infrastructure.

Kibias brings over two decades of experience in the power sector to his new role. The seasoned engineer has built his expertise across multiple areas, including design and construction, power system planning, operation and maintenance.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and a Master's in Business Administration (Strategic Management) from the University of Eastern Africa.

He has furthered his specialization with a Master's in Nuclear Power Plant Engineering from KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School in South Korea, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Energy Studies at Moi University.

As a registered professional engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya, Kibias is also an active member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and serves on the Federation of African Engineering Organizations Nuclear Committee.

Prior to his appointment as Acting Managing Director, Kibias served in various leadership positions within KETRACO. His roles included General Manager for System Operation and Power Management, where he worked across multiple regional capacities.

He also held positions as Regional Manager in two regions and County Manager in various counties and contributed to Design and Construction, Power System Planning, Operation and Maintenance, and Regional coordination roles at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

KETRACO, incorporated in December 2008, is a fully government-owned state corporation under the State Corporations Act.

The company's mandate encompasses planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining high-voltage electricity transmission grids and regional power interconnectors that form the backbone of Kenya's National Transmission Grid.

The appointment comes as KETRACO implements significant infrastructure projects, including the ongoing construction of an 81-kilometer 132kV transmission line connecting Narok to Bomet.

This project aims to distribute surplus geothermal power from the Olkaria Geothermal Complex to western regions, reducing strain on existing transmission lines while enhancing system reliability.

The new transmission line will provide an alternative power supply route from Olkaria to the South Nyanza region and connect with the existing network towards Sotik and Kisii, addressing current constraints in the network running from Lessos.
