Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University to conduct an audit on all 2024 graduates before awarding of certificates

The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) will conduct an audit on all 2024 graduates before awarding any certificate amid reports of irregular awarding of degrees at the institution.

On Tuesday, November 26, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) revealed that at least 200 students from the university bribed the university's officials to avoid sitting supplementary examinations and appear on the graduation list.

In response to the EACC's statement, the university's Vice Chancellor Prof. Emily Akuno clarified that some students' names who had engaged in such irregular practices were expunged from the preliminary graduation list.

Further, the institution formed a team, in collaboration with EACC officials, to thoroughly vet all graduates before awarding any certificate.

"We are dedicated to promoting transparency, ethical conduct, and good governance in all our operations," Prof. Akuno stated.

"We appreciate the public's continued support and patience as these matters are addressed through the appropriate legal and institutional channels."

While launching investigations on Tuesday, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi called on the university to move swiftly and take administration action on those found culpable.

"The commission, as the investigations continue, expects the university administration to move with speed and take administrative action to remedy the menace because if investigations confirm the allegations, then that would be a serious problem," Ngumbi said in Ugenya sub-county.

He added that the commission had observed a similar trend in at least 18 universities which are under investigations.
