"I Would Disown You": Esther Musila Reacts To Student Involvement In Fire

Businesswoman and social media personality Esther Musila has sparked debate online after sharing a strongly worded reaction to the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
In a post shared on her Instagram page, Musila expressed shock and disappointment over allegations that some students may have been involved in the dormitory blaze that claimed the lives of 16 learners and left dozens injured.
Reacting to reports surrounding the incident, she said:

“I would disown you! If you can do that to another person, why wouldn’t you do that to me and burn down my house?”

The statement quickly attracted hundreds of reactions from Kenyans, many of whom echoed her call for accountability.

Several commenters argued that those found responsible should face the full force of the law regardless of their age.
“Punishment yao ikue kama ya mtu ako over 18 years,” one user wrote.
Another added:
“I support you.”
Others expressed sympathy for families affected by the tragedy while demanding justice for the victims.
“Personally, take you to prison with hard labour,” one commenter said, while another wrote, “May all the affected parents find peace, though it will take time.”
Nation Still Reeling From School Fire Tragedy

The Utumishi Girls Academy fire, which broke out in the early hours of May 28, remains one of the deadliest school disasters in Kenya in recent years. Authorities confirmed that 16 students died while 79 others were injured. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since arrested eight students as part of the probe. Detectives say forensic analysis of CCTV footage helped identify several learners allegedly linked to the incident.

According to investigators, the suspects are expected to face legal proceedings as authorities continue gathering evidence and establishing the circumstances that led to the deadly blaze.

Wider Questions on Safety and Responsibility

The tragedy has reignited national conversations about student discipline, mental well-being, and safety standards in boarding schools.
While many Kenyans have called for justice for the victims, others have urged authorities to also examine broader concerns such as emergency preparedness, fire safety measures, and supervision in schools. Questions have been raised about whether existing safety protocols were adequate and properly enforced.

For grieving families, however, the focus remains on the lives lost and the search for answers.

As investigations continue, Musila remarks reflect the anger, heartbreak, and frustration felt by many Kenyans struggling to come to terms with a tragedy that has left the nation mourning.
