Barack and Michelle Obama are celebrating their 31st wedding anniversary.
The couple, who have been married since 1992, took to their socials to express their love for each other, with both sharing sweet words to mark the moment.
The former US president wrote on Instagram: “Happy anniversary, sweetheart! @MichelleObama, you're brilliant, kind, funny, and beautiful-and I'm lucky to call you mine.”
He shared an image of the beaming couple standing in front of a field to mark the moment.
Michelle also shared her own heartwarming post, one of the couple posing for a picture with the sun either rising or setting in the beautiful background.
She wrote: “31 years, and a lifetime to go. I love going through life with you by my side, @BarackObama. Happy anniversary, honey!”
Their posts attracted love and admiration from fans and celebrities alike, who flooded the comment sections with positive messages.
“So beautiful! May love continue to flourish all around u in every way! blessings!” singer Alicia Keys wrote.
“More grace, more smiles, more love to the best couple in the world,” wrote an Instagram user.
Business Insider reports that the pair met in 1989 when Michelle was assigned to mentor Barack at a law firm.
“Barack Obama, then 28, and Michelle Robinson, then 25, met at the Chicago office of the law firm Sidley Austin LLP,” the report notes.
"Because I went to Harvard and he went to Harvard, and the firm thought, 'Oh, we'll hook these two people up,'" Michelle said in a 2008 interview. In his 2020 memoir, "A Promised Land," Barack Obama wrote he "was smitten almost from the second I saw her."
She reluctantly agreed to go out with a young Barrack, but the date went well, with the pair having lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago, then taking a stroll and eventually going to see the Spike Lee Film ‘Do The Right Thing.’
The couple were engaged by 1991, and tied the knot on October 3 1992. They went on to welcome daughters Malia, 25, and Sasha, 22.
The Independent reports that throughout their decade-long union, they have spoken candidly about the challenges they faced during their relationship.
The former first lady opened up about the ups and downs most couples face and revealed in a 2022 interview that there was a decade in her life when she struggled with her marriage.
“People think I’m being catty by saying this - it’s like, there were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband,” she said. “And guess when it happened? When those kids were little.”
Michelle added: “And for 10 years while we’re trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who’s doing what and what, I was like: ‘Ugh, this isn’t even.’ And guess what? Marriage isn’t 50/50, ever, ever.”
She however noted that for a marriage to work, even in times of struggle or disagreement, you’ve got to “know your person” and “like who they are.”
