How to Protect Sensitive Skin Under Makeup

For women with sensitive skin, the simple joy of putting on makeup often remains a dream. One wrong product or even a slightly abrasive application can lead to redness, itching, or even worse, frustrating breakouts.
But makeup and sensitive skin don’t have to be at odds. With a few thoughtful steps and the right preparation, you can protect your skin while enjoying the benefits of a flawless look. Here’s how:
Start with a gentle cleanser: Your skin preparation must begin at the sink. Opt for a sulfate-free, fragrance-free cleanser that respects your skin’s barrier. Micellar water or cream-based cleansers are ideal for reactive skin types. Avoid hot water and instead use lukewarm water to prevent inflammation.
Hydrate: One reason sensitive skin is more prone to irritation is a compromised barrier. Using a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser packed with ceramides, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid helps strengthen its defence. Take time to let the moisturiser absorb fully before applying any makeup.
Use a calming primer: Primers do more than just blur pores; they can be the soothing shield your skin needs. Look for formulas specifically made for sensitive or redness-prone skin. Silicone-based primers can create a barrier between your skin and makeup, reducing the risk of irritation. Be on the lookout for ingredients like green tea extract, allantoin and Centella asiatica, better known as cica, which are especially helpful.
Patch test: Yes, do this with everything, from your foundation to your setting spray. Sensitive skin can react to even the most unexpected ingredients. Therefore, you should first apply a small amount on your jawline or behind your ear and wait 24 hours before fully using any product on your face.
Keep it minimal: The fewer the ingredients in your product, the better. Choose makeup that is labelled hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and dermatologically tested. Mineral-based foundations are also usually a safe bet because they’re breathable, non-irritating and can even have soothing properties thanks to zinc oxide.

Tools matter a lot: When was the last time you washed your brushes? Dirty brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria. Clean your tools weekly with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. When applying makeup, use soft, synthetic brushes or clean fingers to avoid unnecessary friction.
