How Househelp Vanished With Ksh2.2 Million in Cash From Employer's Nairobi House

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed intricate details of how a househelp somehow stole Ksh2.2 million from her employer's house before eventually getting nabbed.

In a statement on the evening of Sunday, March 30, the DCI revealed they had nabbed the housekeeper and recovered the money, two weeks after she had mysteriously vanished.

According to the investigative agency, the incident took place on March 16, with the domestic worker planning to carry out her heist after her employer left the home.

After the employer left her home to run errands, the housekeeper set her plan in motion by making her way to the master bedroom and stealing Ksh2.2 million in cash. She proceeded to walk out of the residence with the cash inside a carrier bag.

It took the intervention of the security guard, who immediately called the employer to inform her that her employee had left the residence with a suspicious bag in her hands.

"Rushing back home, panic turned into horror when she discovered that Ksh2.2 million she had kept safely in her bedroom had vanished, just like her house-help," DCI revealed.

Detectives from DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters and their Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau counterparts swung into action after the theft, and they eventually cornered the housekeeper in Malava, Kakamega County.

Interestingly, she was nabbed; the suspect had split the money in separate locations. She initially led detectives to her grandmother's house in Kapsoi, Vihiga County, where Ksh700,000 was recovered.

The operation then led detectives to Kipkaren, Uasin Gishu County, and then Nairobi’s South B, Fuata Nyayo area, where a further Ksh800,000 was recovered.

Before proceeding to Nairobi, detectives also made a stop at the suspect's rural home in Kipkaren, Uasin Gishu County, where several chain links were discovered. Detectives believe the chain links were bought with the stolen cash.

The DCI did not disclose the whereabouts of the rest of the money.

Meanwhile, the suspect has since been detained at Capitol Hill Police Station awaiting a court date.
