President William Ruto has officially granted a charter to Gretsa University, recognising it as a fully accredited institution of higher learning in Kenya.

The ceremony took place at the State House in Nairobi on Monday, November 17, 2025.

In a formal address during a ceremony that took place at the State House in Nairobi on Monday, November 17, 2025, President Ruto said that the Cabinet Secretary for Education had submitted the charter along with recommendations and that he was satisfied that granting the charter would advance university education in Kenya.

Exercising the powers conferred by Section 19 of the Universities Act, Cap 210, he formally signed the charter and handed it over to Gretsa University.

“Whereas the Cabinet Secretary for Education has submitted the charter with recommendations, I am satisfied that the granting of the charter to Gretsa University will be of benefit to the advancement of university education in Kenya,” Ruto stated.

The president also oversaw the transfer of the instruments of authority, including the university seal, to the Vice Chancellor, Peter Ndichu Karanja, symbolising formal recognition and independence.

“By this presence, be it known that I hereby grant the charter annexed hereto to Gretsa University on this 17th day of November in the year 2025. Congratulations,” he said.

The event was held in the presence of Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, the Chairman of the Commission for University Education, and other senior dignitaries.

President Ruto congratulated the university, highlighting that its objectives align with the advancement of higher education in the country. The charter allows Gretsa University to operate fully under Kenyan law, enhancing credibility for its programmes and qualifications.

Vice Chancellor Peter Ndichu Karanja received the charter and expressed gratitude to the president, the Education Ministry, and the university’s sponsors for their support in achieving this milestone.

The handover of the university seal symbolises formal authority and independence, allowing Gretsa University to manage academic programmes, research, and student opportunities.

Being granted a charter legally recognises the university as fully accredited under Kenyan law, allows it to award nationally and internationally recognised degrees, and gives it autonomy in governance and academic management.

Gretsa University’s charter follows similar approvals earlier in 2025, when President William Ruto awarded charters to Riara University in March and Uzima University in May, reinforcing the government’s commitment to expanding quality higher education across the country.
