Uasin Gishu governor Jonathan Bii has asked National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Managing Director Joseph Kimote to come out clear and reveal the origin of fake subsidized fertilizer.
Speaking in Eldoret town, Bii said the MD is answerable as to why fake fertilizer is in NCPB's stores.
The governor called on Kimote to publicly address the issue of presence and distribution of counterfeit fertilizer, emphasizing that a thorough probe must be conducted.
Bii said it's unfortunate that this happens as farmers rush in preparation for planting.
“How was it possible to have fake fertilizer in NCPB stores? This is a Kenya Kwanza government project. Last year we did not see a problem. You must be answerable?” Bii said on Wednesday.
Farmers across Kenya have reported that they have received substandard fertilizer, where some contained pebbles and animal droppings in its contents.
Last week, Agriculture Principal Secretary Kipronoh Ronoh ordered NCPB to stop the distribution of the said fertilizer.
Kimote was instructed to carry out an investigation to ascertain the specifications of the fertilizer before its re-distribution.
However, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has dismissed claims of circulation of fake fertilizer through NCPB.
