Government suspends KEL chemicals for distributing substandard fertilizer

The government has announced that the subsidized fertiliser at its National Cereal and Produce Board (NCPB) depots is safe for use after thorough testing.

The Agriculture Ministry in a statement on Friday informed farmers across the country that all fertilisers currently at the depots were of standard quality with an exemption of products distributed by Ms KEL Chemicals.

Farmers have therefore been warned against purchasing any fertiliser from the company that has been branded Kelphos Plus, Kelphos Gold and NPK 10:26:10 since it does not meet standards by KEBs.

"The government has completed the testing on all fertilizers being distributed under the subsidy programme and wishes to confirm to the public and farmers that ALL Fertilizers being distributed meet the required quality requirements except those manufactured and distributed by Ms KEL Chemicals branded Kelphos Plus, Kelphos gold and NPK 10:26:10, which did not meet all required test parameters," read the notice.

The Ministry said the MS KEL manufacturer company had been suspended and its fertiliser products seized.

"The Government has further seized and impounded all fertilizer stocks distributed by KEL Chemicals at the National Cereals Produce Board (NCPB) facilities. This step is essential to control and mitigate any adverse effects on agricultural practices," stated the notice.

As the government reiterates its commitment to protect farmers and the agricultural sector, KEBS has also initiated legal action against KEL Chemicals for distributing substandard products as per the Standards Act Cap 496.

At the same time, farmers who have already acquired the fertilizer from KEL Chemicals to immediately discontinue its use and visit their nearest NCPB facility for further guidance.
