The devastating floods have caused more than Ksh.80 billion in infrastructure damage, according to government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura on Monday.
According to Mwaura, who was speaking to the media, the figure only represents damage to roads and is expected to rise once other sectors are taken into account.
"The damage from the floods is huge because it is coming to exacerbate an already worse situation when you consider the effects of the el-nino rains," Mwaura said.
"The damages these rains have caused is upto Ksh.80Bm, and this is mostly on roads alone."
Meanwhile, Mwaura reported that 44 primary and 27 secondary schools were unable to reopen on Monday due to flood damage.
He stated that the majority of the schools are in Nyeri county, where 12 primary and 16 secondary schools have yet to reopen due to flooded classrooms and toilets.
In Kisumu, five schools were inaccessible after they were submerged by backflow from Lake Victoria while in Pokot, two schools have been rendered inaccessible after a key bridge was swept away.
Elsewhere, fifty-three cases of cholera have been reported in Tana River and Marsabit counties as parts of Kenya continue to grapple with the aftermath of devastating floods.
According to Mwaura, the floods have displaced over 113,000 households across the country, with Nairobi accounting for the majority of these (58,009).
Meanwhile, the death toll from the floods has risen to 277, with one more person dying in the past day.
