The government will allocate an extra Ksh.29.4 billion to the police service over the next three years as part of its plan to enhance the country's security services.
In a statement by the Interior Ministry on Friday, the funds will be used to purchase advanced equipment such as Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPs), drones, gunship helicopters, mine sweepers, and personal protection gear.
Already, the government invested Ksh.7.6 billion to purchase modern equipment under the Police Equipment Modernisation programme (PEM).
The new equipment is expected to boost operations in the North Rift region to end banditry and counter-terrorism efforts.
According to the Ministry, the enhancements aim to protect frontline police officers and citizens' security.
In total, the police service was allocated Ksh.110 billion in the financial year 2024/25, an increase of Ksh.11.4 billion from the previous financial year.
The Ministry has also finalised a strategic framework to implement the report drafted by a National Taskforce on Police Reforms, led by former Chief Justice David Maraga. The report was handed over to the president in November 2023.
According to Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the first phase of the report will focus on revising service charters and developing new service standards.
“We are similarly bringing development partners to the table to support some of the projects and programmes identified in the recommendations," said Omollo.
The Ministry reiterated that the government would not exploit the police service for political gains as declared by President William Ruto in his manifesto.
"No public servant, even chiefs and their assistants will be required to run political errands for any political party or formation," declared the president.
