Education PS Bitok Says KEMIS Education Data System To Go Live On January 9, 2026

Ministry of Education Principal Secretary Bitok has announced that the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) will officially go live on January 9, 2026, marking a major milestone in the government’s efforts to streamline education data and improve service delivery across the sector.

Speaking during an interview at a local TV station on Thursday, January 1, 2026, PS Bitok acknowledged existing challenges with the current National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), describing it as rigid, limited in scope, and not easily integrable with other government systems.

He said the shortcomings of NEMIS informed the decision to upgrade to a more intelligent and agile platform.

“KEMIS is envisioned as a comprehensive education sector system,” Bitok said, explaining that it will cover basic education, higher education, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as key agencies such as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Under the new system, KEMIS will serve as a one-stop solution for education data, enabling seamless tracking of a learner’s academic journey.

According to the PS, a single click on the platform will allow authorities to view where an individual attended primary school, secondary school, college and university.

“If someone tells you they have gone to school, you will be able to confirm their entire education pathway on KEMIS,” he said, adding that this vision will enhance transparency, accountability and planning in the sector.

Bitok noted that backend preparations are currently underway in collaboration with the Ministry of ICT, Konza Technopolis and other stakeholders to ensure the system is robust and fully integrated before the launch date.

He emphasised that the implementation of KEMIS will support accurate data on learner numbers and enable smoother transitions from junior school to senior school under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

“I want to be remembered for streamlining systems and data in the education sector,” Bitok said, adding that decisive leadership and integrated digital systems are critical to effective monitoring of learners and overall sector reform.
