Driver of the truck that killed 52 people at Londiani Junction arraigned in court

The driver of the truck that crashed in Londiani Junction on July 1, killing 52 people, was arraigned at Molo Law Courts.

52 year old Gilbert Mutuye Mungu was presented in court on Wednesday to face 90 charges including dangerous driving which led to loss of lives and damages to 10 vehicles.

Molo Chief Magistrate Ellena Nderitu gave a decision that she will make a bail ruling on Thursday.

The driver, a Rwandeese national, said that he was not aware the vehicle was faulty when he was driving it as the prosecution team had claimed.

The Magistrate ordered that he be held up at the Londiani Police Station in Kericho County for the night until she makes a decision on whether or not to grant him bail.

Around 6.30 p.m. on the first day of July, an out-of-control truck hurtling down the Nakuru-Kisumu highway crashed at the busy Londiani junction market, killing 52 people and injuring scores of others.

Thirty-one men, 18 women and two children perished.
