Drama ensued in Kisii after gunshots were fired during an event in which Kisii Governor Simba Arati was issuing bursaries.
Arati's speech was cut short after a commotion in the crowd, followed by several gunshots suspected to have been fired by intruders.
A video posted online showed the attendees of the meeting scampering for safety after the gunshots, ending the event.
According to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Director of Communications Philip Etale, an MP stormed the meeting and started firing at parents and students who had attended the event.
"The government of Kenya should tell Kenyans if what happened in South Mugirango in Kisii today during Governor Simba Arati’s meeting with parents of needy children is justified. Why would an MP storm a meeting and his bodyguards start firing at wananchi? Be the judge," Etale wrote.
Several people have been reported injured during the commotion, although no official data has been released yet.
At the time of going to press, neither the governor nor the police had issued an official communication regarding the incident.
