As Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's fate lies in wait pending a National Assembly decision, results from the recently-held public participation have proven that most Kenyans support the ouster motion.

A document released by Parliament on Tuesday revealed that 116,269 Kenyans who attended the nationwide public participation supported Gachagua's impeachment while 69,195 voted against it.

Parliament noted that nine constituencies voted overwhelmingly, 100%, in favour of Gachagua's ouster among them Balambala with 313 votes, Daadab (305), Fafi (121), Kirinyaga Central (120), Kuresoi North (39), Lafey (247), Magarini (I45), Mandera South (102) and Mogotio (454).

Other counties recorded 99% support in favour of the impeachment among them Bondo with 317 votes, Butere (370), Ijara (230), Kibwezi West (501), Kinango (102), Konoin (502), Lamu East (542), Likoni (824) and Likuyani (362).

Others include Mandera East (376), Mandera Noth (391), Mt. Elgon (388), Mumias West (503), Sirisia (426), Tarbaj (124), Taty (373)Tongaren (148).

Several constituencies also opposed Gachagua's removal as those who voted above the 90% mark include 5,598 in Mathira (97%), 1,002 in Gilgil (97%), 4,754 in Kigumo (95%), 708 in Kinangop (96%) and 1,608 Kipipiri 98%.

Some 428 participants in Kitui Rural (94%) also voted in Gachagua's defense, 4,286 in Maragwa (97%), 2,884 in Mukurweini (97%), 2,496 in Naivasha (95%) and 1,001 in Ol Kalou (95%).

There is however a discrepancy in the document as Parliament said that 43 people in Keiyo South took part in the exercise but also indicated that 70 residents voted in support of the impeachment and 1 opposed it.

This has cast doubt on the credibility of the numbers as the House has intimated that it was a clerical error.

The nationwide public participation held on October 4 and 5 saw Kenyans censuring the government for prioritising the impeachment of its own and abandoning the hard-pressing matters affecting Kenyans.

Gachagua is expected to stage a defence before the House against the 11 charges floated against him including gross misconduct, violation of the Constitution, undermining the presidency, and corruption among others. 

He has assembled a battery of 20 advocates including senior counsels to defend him both in parliament and at the courts.

Meanwhile, he has maintained that he will not fold to the calls for resignation and will remain steadfast in serving Kenyans.

“I will get justice and carry out my duties as DP. Anybody sending me messages to resign is a joker. I have done nothing wrong to Kenyans,” he said during a press address from his Karen residence on Monday evening.
