The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has dismissed reports that he is eyeing the Deputy President's position should the Senate uphold Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Atwoli explained that he is a trade unionist and does not desire to hold another elective or appointive seat.
According to Atwoli, rumours have surfaced online that the DP position should be reserved for the Western region, with a few notable names – including his - being thrown in the ring as suitable candidates.
"Those people who are busy peddling rumors under some unknown research document, on who should be considered for DP from Western Kenya, should stop and forget such unprocessed thoughts," he stated.
"The Luhyas have known leaders, in government, who represent the community ably. I am a trade unionist, period. And I do not desire any other elective or appointive seat."
The COTU boss noted that such information should be conveyed by the region's spokespersons.
"If there is anything coming for the Luhya community we have known political leaders who speak for the community politically and represent us in government. I am just an elder and advisor," he added.
Atwoli's remarks come amid the ongoing impeachment motion against the DP that is before the Senate.
This after 282 MPs supported the motion to remove Gachagua from office, citing that he violated the Constitution after two years.
The Senate is expected to deliberate the matter within 10 days before either upholding the motion or giving the DP another lifeline.
