Abduction of former MCA and his son linked to a ksh 1.5 billion Equity bank heist

The recent abduction of former Kamacharia Member of County Assembly (MCA) Joseph Machiri is now believed to be connected to a Ksh. 1.5 billion bank heist.

The investigation is focused on how the credentials of Machiri's son, a bank manager at a local financial institution, were used to carry out fraudulent transfers while he was on medical leave.

The bank fraud case gained attention after armed men forced their way into Machiri's home in Thogoto, Kiambu County, on Sunday and arrested him.

Simultaneously, another group of heavily armed men was captured on CCTV breaking into the home of Machiri’s father in Mathioya, Murang'a County, in search of unknown items.

CCTV footage from Sunday night shows a white car arriving at Machiri’s father’s residence, followed by three men approaching the vehicle.

Moments later, six masked, heavily armed men stormed the property.

The intruders, equipped with rifles and a detector, quickly disabled the power supply after discovering the security cameras installed by the former MCA.

The men entered the house, where Machiri was with his wife and grandchildren, claiming to be police officers.

They conducted a thorough search of the premises, moving from room to room in search of unspecified items. Despite their efforts, they found nothing and eventually took Machiri with them, forcing him to kneel before his family as they left.

Machiri’s brother, Kenneth Mwangi, described hearing the commotion and stepping outside to investigate, only to be confronted by the armed men who identified themselves as police officers.

The family was left shaken as the men departed with Machiri after an hours-long search.

The abduction of Joseph Machiri occurred approximately 12 hours after his son, David Machiri, was similarly taken by individuals believed to be security officers in Thogoto, Kiambu County.

David, who was previously arrested and charged with defrauding a local bank of Ksh. 1.5 billion, had been released on bail despite the prosecution's request for extended detention.

As the case approaches its hearing date, David’s father has been named a person of interest, further complicating the family’s situation.

The family’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, has called on authorities, including the Acting Inspector General and Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kindiki, to provide answers regarding the whereabouts of both father and son.

Joseph Machiri was eventually released by his abductors more than 24 hours later and left on a roadside.

However, the whereabouts of his son David remain unknown, leaving the family in a state of distress and uncertainty.
