City lawyer in conflict with Ruto aide over WhatsApp group chats

Harriette Chiggai, who serves as President William Ruto's adviser on women's rights, has expressed her intention to take legal action against a lawyer for allegedly making defamatory remarks about her during a discussion on a WhatsApp group.

In a letter sent by her lawyers, Kamunda Njue & Co. Advocates, to lawyer Ignatius Muhatia, Ms. Chiggai claims that on March 22, 2023, the lawyer made statements that harmed her reputation on a WhatsApp group named "Western Jurists Forum." The letter explains that these alleged defamatory remarks arose during an open conversation on the forum, in which both Ms. Chiggai, Mr. Muhatia, and other group members participated.

According to the advocates' letter, Mr. Muhatia's response to Ms. Chiggai's inquiry within the discussion was reckless and insensitive. The letter states that he published a statement that negatively portrayed Ms. Chiggai, despite the efforts she has made to establish her reputation.

The advocates describe the statement as false, scandalous, scurrilous, and baseless, lacking any factual basis. They further assert that the purpose of these statements was to subject Ms. Chiggai to public humiliation, hatred, contempt, and ridicule.

The advocates argue that the lawyer's statements falsely depict Ms. Chiggai as incapable of holding her leadership positions based on merit. They emphasize that these statements are entirely untrue, malicious, highly inaccurate, misleading to the general public, and damaging to Ms. Chiggai's official and professional standing.

Ms. Chiggai demands a written apology from the lawyer to be issued on the same WhatsApp group where the defamatory remarks were made. Additionally, she expects him to refrain from further defaming her. If the lawyer fails to comply with these requests, the advocates warn that legal action will be taken against him, seeking damages.
