5 dead after an accident involving a motorcycle and a truck

Five people died while another sustained serious injuries after an accident occurred in the Denyenye area along the Likoni-Kombani road in Kwale County.

The Sunday morning accident involved a motorcycle and a truck. It is believed that all the deceased were travelling on the motorbike when the accident occurred.

According to police, the accident occurred when the motorcycle carrying five passengers hit the lorry from the rear.

Police further speculated that the motorbike rider, who was travelling from Kombani towards Likoni, saw the stalled truck too late in the 1 am incident.

Coast Regional Police boss George Sedah confirmed the incident saying the deceased were taken to Kwale Hospital Mortuary for identification and autopsy.

“It seems there were six people on the motorcycle because one survived and was rushed to the hospital,” he divulged.

“We urge all parties including pedestrians to always be cautious for their safety."

The lone survivor of the accident was rushed to the Diani Beach Hospital.

This incident was the latest in a worrying spate of accidents that have rocked the country in recent weeks.

It occurred just two days after six school children lost their lives in a hit-and-run incident along Kitui-Kibwezi road.

The victims, three primary school and three secondary school children died from a speeding car, whose driver has since been arrested.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority, most accidents on Kenyan roads are avoidable, since they are a result of human error.

Driver fatigue, poor visibility (particularly for pedestrians), and drunk driving are some of the factors attributed to most fatal accidents.
