4 dead after scaffolding collapses at Pangani

At least four people have died and eight others injured after falling off the 15th floor of a construction building in the Pangani area in Nairobi.

The incident at the Bajun Tower along Mukunga Street happened when the scaffolding of the building under construction collapsed.

According to the police reports, most of the people injured were construction workers with rescue operations underway.

Starehe Sub-County Police Boss Fred Abuga confirmed the incident, saying investigations are ongoing to establish what occurred at the site.

Rescuers drawn from different agencies led by the Nairobi County Disaster Management teams responded at Mukunga Street in the Pangani Area of Nairobi.

The teams attending this site known as Bajun Towers still under construction confirming the deaths of four people.

“Walikuwa wanapiga plaster kwa gorofa ya 15 na zile miti zilikuwa zinawazuia ndio zilivunjika,” OCPD William Sirengo said.

Eight others who sustained serious injuries from the fall are currently undergoing treatment at different facilities.

“We have some at KNH and others here… we have also put in place counselling just in case someone needs that,” Patience Kitongo from the Red Cross said.

This desk also seeks to register and account for all construction workers present.

Residents in the area decried the state of construction in Pangani and Eastleigh where they say developers are not adhering to safety standards.

“Wakati walianza kujenga hapa kulikuwa na vyuma siku hizi wanaweka miti motu anaanguka na anaenda kabisa ,” Jeremaiah Kyalo.

“Wale watu wa NCA wangekuja hapa waangalie hizi ngazi zinatumika hapa hawa watu hawange anguka na hatungekuwa na vifo,” Steve Mwanja added.

The residents now saying that agencies tasked with the responsibility of giving approvals and enforcing adherence to safety during construction have turned a blind eye to the construction mess in the area.
