World Championships fights increasing number of Covid 19 cases

On and off the track, the USA is hosting the World Athletics Championships for the first time at Oregon State's Hayward Field.

However, World Athletics and the championship's Local Organising Committee (LOC) are currently dealing with Covid-19 incidents among accredited individuals

Since Monday, the organizers have improved safety procedures to protect the athletes.

"We are noticing an increase in Covid-19 incidents among accredited people (not isolated to one place or one class)," said Oregon22 media operations.

"As a precautionary measure to protect the athletes and the workforce," the statement said, "we are making it mandatory for all workforce, volunteers, technical and medical officials, broadcasters, media, contractors, and all other accredited people to wear a mask (preferably KN95 or FFP2) as soon as they enter a closed/indoor space or any mass transit transport."

This competition drew almost 1,900 athletes from 192 teams, with the hosts bringing 151 competitors.

Athletes, team officials, the media, volunteers, technical officials, partners, and World Athletics' top brass are among those who have been accredited.

Since the declaration, all journalists that enter the mixed zone have had contact with athletes wearing masks. Athletes, too, walk throughout the region while disguised.

"It is strongly advised that athletes use masks in indoor areas at the competition venue provided this does not interfere with their preparation or recovery," according to the statement.
