Tiaty Member of Parliament (MP) William Kamket has sparked a storm with his controversial remarks, suggesting that President William Ruto’s tenure should be extended.

Kamket, a close ally of the President, made the statements during an interdenominational service at Kerio Valley in Elgeyo Marakwet on Sunday, January 5, where the Head of State was present.

In his speech, Kamket vehemently lashed out at individuals and groups who have been vocal in their opposition to Ruto’s administration.

He called out critics for their constant attacks, declaring that if the opposition continues to target the President, those advocating for the extension of his term should not be surprised by the consequences.

“I come from that county, Baringo County, where we know what the number 24 years means.

“We are the ones who know how to manufacture for the President to be on the seat for 24 years,” Kamket said referencing to how President Moi stayed in power for 24 years.

The MP claimed that the president has been intimidated by certain leaders, which will also compel them to take the term extension route.

“If they play, if they play, we can even tell you to go for some additional time,” he said.

”There are some funny characters who are trying to disturb this government, and we want to thank Kimani Ichung’wah for speaking for us recently,” Kamket added.

Oscar Sudi, Kapseret Member of Parliament who is generally considered to be an insider to the President, rejected Kamket’s statements, claiming that the concept was unlawful.

“Kamket, we are people who honour the Constitution. President Ruto, you have eight years remaining on your term for you to exit the office and go home,” Sudi said.

The concept of increasing presidential term limits has been put out by a Rift Valley leader previously.

A bill requesting such an extension was previously introduced in the Senate by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei.
