President William Ruto paid a visit to his predecessor, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Monday at his Gatundu home, where the two leaders discussed critical national and regional issues.

In a post-meeting State House statement, the leaders emphasised their commitment to fostering national unity, addressing pressing economic challenges, and advancing Kenya's development goals.

President Ruto praised President Kenyatta's exemplary statesmanship during the peaceful transition of power following the 2022 General Elections, as well as his ongoing commitment to national progress. 

“President Ruto took the opportunity to reiterate his appreciation and commendation of His Excellency President Kenyatta’s statesmanship in overseeing the peaceful transfer of power after the 2022 elections,” the statement read in part.

According to the State House, the two leaders recognised the challenges posed by global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine, and volatile economic conditions. 

They acknowledged Kenya's progress in addressing these issues, citing milestones such as lower inflation, stabilised food prices, and a stronger Kenyan shilling.

"Both leaders acknowledged the challenging global environment affecting many countries, including Kenya, caused by a complex interplay of factors: disruptive effects of COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, which destabilised supply chains and led to high commodity prices, particularly for fertiliser and wheat, volatile currency markets, and a harsh macroeconomic climate," the statement noted. 

President Ruto also praised his predecessor for laying a strong foundation that has supported the implementation of key initiatives under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. 

These include food security, universal health coverage, affordable housing, MSME empowerment, infrastructure development, and educational reforms.

The leaders agreed on the need to accelerate these efforts to improve household incomes and create opportunities for all Kenyans.

The two leaders also underscored the importance of cultivating patriotism and fostering collaboration across the government, civil society, religious groups, and other stakeholders to ensure Kenya’s stability and progress. 

They also highlighted the need for broader political consensus to enhance inclusive governance and national development.

Regionally, the meeting acknowledged Kenya’s critical role in promoting peace and stability in East Africa. 

President Ruto commended President Kenyatta for his unwavering dedication to peacebuilding initiatives, which have significantly contributed to resolving conflicts in the region.

Domestically, the leaders called for the swift resolution of legal matters surrounding the constitution of the IEBC selection panel to facilitate the appointment of commissioners. 

They also rallied support for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission Chairmanship, urging Kenyans and international partners to back his candidacy.

This marks the first public interaction between the two leaders since their high-profile fallout ahead of the 2022 General Elections.
