Melanin Does Crack: Garnier Shares at the Launch of its New Super UV SPF 50 Sunscreen

Melanin Does Crack: Garnier Shares at the Launch of its New Super UV SPF 50 Sunscreen

The event had all the elements of a soft life masterclass with skin analysis stations, pros breaking down sun protection science, and even an interactive  skincare quiz where you could test how well you actually know your routine

There are three things I rarely turn down: a good meal, a good beat, and a chance to glow without breaking the bank.

So, when I got wind of a skincare event that promised all three plus a performance by Nikita Kering and whispers of a sunscreen specifically made for African skin, I confirmed my attendance with the swiftness of a girl who’s well in her skincare era and eager to learn, unlearn and relearn everything in this field.

The event? The official launch of Garnier Super UV SPF 50, a sunscreen that claims to be lightweight, leave zero white cast, and actually formulated for melanin-rich skin.

Location? Bao Box, Westlands - a vibe in itself with superb lighting for selfies and the kind of atmosphere that screams “happy and unbothered.”

As soon as the event started unfolding, I realized two things:

1. Sunscreen is no longer optional.

2. This wasn’t just another product launch; it was a skincare intervention for every African girlie who’s been wronged by white-cast SPF.

Content creators Nick Kwatch and Aicy Stevens:

Let’s get real for a second. For years, many of us have been led to believe that melanin was built-in armour backed up by the eons-old phrase, “Black don’t crack,”

But they forgot to add: “…unless exposed to UV rays daily without protection." A lesson most of us have sadly learned this the hard way.

Those dark marks that take forever to fade? That sudden texture shift? That annoying hyperpigmentation that refuses to go away even after gallons of aloe vera and prayer? UV rays, babe. They’ve been attacking in silence.

What struck me (other than the delicious sticky wings and the bottomless soft drinks because hydration is part of skincare, right?) was how intentional the whole event felt.

There were skin tests, tutorials, actual explanations about UVA and UVB (turns out they’re not a rap duo), and a whole nail bar experience. And get this: they even emphasized the importance of wearing sunscreen before using the UV nail dryer.

Soon as I walked in, I was greeted by smiles, sun, and good vibes. Everyone looked immaculate having honoured the invites' theme of yellow and white.

The event had all the elements of a soft life masterclass. Think skin analysis stations, pros breaking down sun protection science, and even an interactive skincare quiz on a giant screen where you could test how well you actually know your routine.

My first stop was the UV camera station. I’d seen this thing online, and I've always been curious. I mean, we've all seen those haunting before-and-after shots that reveal sun damage you didn’t even know existed. And, they drop a whole building on your head by telling you your face is not only dry but exists in the 30's while you're just in your early 20's.

But let me tell you, nothing prepares you for seeing your actual face under a UV lens. It was like meeting the ghost of  skincare past. Suddenly, all those “I'm indoors or it's raining I don't really need sunscreen” moments flashed before my eyes. Literally. Dark spots. Hyperpigmentation. Texture. All visible under that unforgiving UV gaze.

And just when I thought I’d emotionally recovered, I was ushered to another screen this one more interactive and forgiving. A playful skincare quiz popped up, testing attendees on their sun care knowledge. “How often should you reapply sunscreen?” “Which UV rays cause aging?” “Does glass block UV rays?” The questions were fun but enlightening, and I quickly realized most of us have been winging our skincare routines like we’re auditioning for a role in Clueless: The Epidermis Edition.

The truth is, for years, sunscreen has felt like an afterthought for many Black women. It either left us looking like we lost a flour fight or came with a price tag that made us think, “Maybe I’ll just stay indoors.”

But this new Garnier drop? It’s saying no more.

According to Natalie Njenga, Brand Business Lead at L’Oréal, “The launch of Garnier Super UV SPF 50 Sunscreen is a milestone in skincare innovation. We understand the unique skincare challenges faced by people with melanin-rich skin, and this sunscreen is formulated to provide 99% protection from sun damage and dark marks.”

Adding as a group, “We understand the unique skincare challenges faced by people with melanin-rich skin.” Honestly, it felt like the first time a skincare brand acknowledged we exist beyond “deep tan” shades and coconut oil. She further emphasized that sunscreen isn’t just for beach days or sunny brunch days. It’s a daily ritual. A form of self-love, if you may.

Of course, no event is complete without a little pampering. After letting strangers analyse my skin under UV, I treated myself to a nail session. But before I sat at the UV lamp, someone casually reminded me to apply sunscreen to my fingers because apparently, even the UV lamps used during gel manicures can damage skin.

You best believe I applied a fresh layer of sunscreen on my fingers before sticking them under that lamp.

Now let’s talk about the sunscreen itself, because yes, I did try it. Lightweight? Check. The promised swift blend with no white cast? Check. Affordable? Yes! My inner broke bestie approved. Plus, it’s packed with Vitamin C—a nice lil’ bonus for anyone dealing with stubborn dark marks.

Afterwards, I finally sat down and was treated to a hearty plate of a juicy mini burger, sticky wings, and crunchy fries with a side of salad. My heart was full because not only was I equipped with knowledge about my skin and the beauty of Garnier's new sunscreen, but my stomach was also very graciously being taken care of.

With a well-fed tummy, it was time for photo sessions across the beautifully decorated outdoor space that radiated warmth as I enjoyed music from the DJs on set.

Then came the part that made me scream: a goodie bag.

Not just a tiny tube and a pamphlet, no. We’re talking the full experience: the new  Garnier  Super UV SPF 50 sunscreen, a gentle face cream wash, both day and night Vitamin C serums, and a sleek little travel pouch that now goes with me everywhere like a sidekick.
