In an event held in Nairobi, Gor Mahia officially introduced Jonathan McKinstry as the new Head Coach. The Northern Irishman has previously managed national teams from Uganda, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone.

As Head Coach of the Uganda National Team, the 'Uganda Cranes' (2019 - 2021), he led Uganda to win CECAFA 2019 and delivered a WIN in 2 out of every 3 games, going undefeated in over 8 out of 10 games played. This was a Uganda National Team Coach's highest 'win' and 'undefeated' rate in over 15 years.

He was the Rwanda National Football Team's International Manager and Head Coach (2015-16). Within 17 months, he led Rwanda to a number of highs, including their first-ever appearance in the knockout stages of a major international tournament (Quarter-finals of CHAN, January 2016) and finishing runner-up in CECAFA (December 2015), earning him the title of 'Coach of the Tournament.'

He was the Head Coach of the Sierra Leone National Men's Football Team from 2013 to 2014. Within a little more than a year, he had led Sierra Leone to their highest-ever FIFA World and African rankings - 7th in Africa and 50th overall (August 2014).

He has also served as Head Coach of Saif Sporting Club in the Bangladesh Premier League (2018-19), as well as FK Kauno Zalgiris in the Lithuanian A-Lyga (2017-18). He is a UEFA-certified European (UEFA), NSCAA-certified American (NSCAA), and university-certified football coach.
