Malkia Strikers, Wafalme Ready To Conquer Zone V Volleyball Tourney

The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) officials are brimming with confidence Malkia Strikers and Wafalme Stars will put up a good show during the upcoming Zone V Championship cum African Games qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt.

Speaking at Nyayo Gymnasium during the unveiling of the two teams’ squads for the tournament on Wednesday, KVF president Charles Nyaberi said Malkia Strikers and their male counterparts Wafalme Stars have the quality to punch tickets for the March 8-23 African Games to be held in Accra, Ghana.

"We go into the competition fully cognizant of the tough competition that awaits us. For men we have carried the Zone V ticket twice while our women’s team are the defending champions. We have a very robust pair of teams and we're confident we'll win the qualifiers," said Nyaberi.

General Service Unit (GSU) head coach Gideon Tarus will lead Wafalme Stars assisted by Kenya Prisons’ Dennis Mokua and Elisha Aliwa of KDF.

Wafalme head coach Gideon Tarus said he was keen to return the team to the event after a 13-year hiatus adding Egypt and Rwanda are the sides which have posed a challenge for his side.

"The morale is high in the camp, we've had challenges in the reception and at defence but we've made a significant improvement. We're going to win," noted Tarrus.

KCB head coach Japheth Munala will be making a return as the head coach of Malkia Strikers and will work alongside Josp Barasa of Kenya Prisons and former setter Janet Wanja.

Munala said they will be using the competition as part of their preparations for the Olympic Games to be held this summer in Paris, France.

The two teams will be trimmed down to 14 for men and 12 for women next Wednesday before jetting out for Cairo on January 20.
