Kenya Kwanza Unveils 5 Members For Ruto-Raila Talks

The Kenya Kwanza coalition has unveiled its five-member team that will negotiate with Azimio la Umoja about the country's problems.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 2, the ruling coalition nominated National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, EALA MP Hassan Omar and Bungoma Women Rep Catherine Wambilianga to the dialogue committee.

The President William Ruto-led coalition reiterated its five-point agenda in the talks with the opposition, which include; the reconstitution of the IEBC Commission, implementation of 2/3 gender rule, entrenchment of Constituency Development Fund, establishment and the entrenchment of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, and embedment of the Office of Prime Cabinet Secretary.

Kenya Kwanza further pointed out that violence should not be part of the country’s national disclosure adding that it will not engage matters of handshake.

“As agreed, there shall be no discussion of whatever nature on matters handshake or nusu mkate,” Kenya Kwanza remarked.

This comes a day after the Azimio coalition unveiled its five-member team that will engage with the government. 

The team includes; the leader of the Minority Party, National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi, DAP Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa, Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni, and Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi.

According to the opposition coalition, the main issues to be discussed in the talks are; the high cost of living, audit of 2022 elections, bipartisan reconstitution of IEBC, inclusivity in national affairs, and respect for political parties in line with the constitution.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo will facilitate the talks between the two coalitions.
