Insurtech MTek eyes travelers with Buupass deal

Insurtech company mTek has teamed up with Buupass, an online travel booking platform, to provide travel insurance to travelers.

In the agreement, customers will be able to select and purchase insurance coverage as part of their ticket booking process.

According to mTek CEO Bente Krogmann, the collaboration will be focal in providing financial protection to travelers in case of ‘unexpected incidents during their journey’.

The insurance will provide comprehensive protection to travelers for accidents and medical emergencies.

Public transportation is the most used mode of travel by the majority of Kenyans, with buses being the most preferred for upcountry trips. In 2022 alone, 11,969 minibuses and 11,699 buses were issued road transport licenses.

According to an economic survey 2024 by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), 9,960 road accidents were recorded in 2023, resulting in over 10,000 people being seriously injured nationwide.

“We are excited to collaborate with BuuPass. This partnership aligns with mTek’s vision of providing accessible and comprehensive insurance. Both mTek and BuuPass share a mutual interest in improving the travel experience for customers,” he stated.

Sonia Kabra, who is the CEO of BuuPass, asserted that the collaboration is in line with Buupaa’s mission to provide the most convenient and reliable travel solutions in the East African Region.

“We are excited to partner with mTek to offer our customers the added security and peace of mind that comes with travel insurance. This collaboration aligns with our mission to provide the most convenient and reliable travel solutions in East Africa,” she stated.
