Former governor William Kabogo says President Ruto handpicked Rigathi Gachagua to be his deputy president

Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has lifted the lid on the circumstances under which President William Ruto picked Rigathi Gachagua as his deputy.

In an interview with Hot 96, Kabogo revealed that Ruto single-handedly picked Gachagua as his deputy, against the will of the majority who wanted Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as UDA presidential running mate.

"We were about 26 people in a room and we did a vote. 21 of us settled for Kindiki as Ruto's running mate, only three picked Gachagua. Waiguru got one, Muturi one other vote. But Ruto decided by himself to pick Gachagua as his running mate," Kabogo said.

Kabogo further revealed that after the vote in favour of Kindiki, Ruto took another 18 hours, and somehow found a way of insisting that Gachagua is his preferred deputy.

"Ruto asked me, William you've been governor and you always wanted your own deputy. So I want to be president, why can't I have my own deputy as well, my own choice? I asked him, then why did you bring the matter to us to decide, he still found his way around it and settled for Gachagua," Kabogo further revealed.

Addressing the ongoing impeachment process against Gachagua, Kabogo suggested that it is time Ruto tells Kenyans why he settled for Gachagua, and why they have fallen out to the extent he wants him removed from office.

Kabogo further said Gachagua has engineered his own downfall by playing the tribal card of 'Watu wa Mlima' against other Kenyans.

Addressing his apology on Sunday, Kabogo said Gachagua was not genuine as he tried to quantify his apology.

Gachagua asked Ruto, MPs and Kenyans to forgive him and his wife if he has wronged them in any way.

Ruto has kept off the impeachment discussion, with his allies pushing to have Gachagua removed from office.

Gachagua is being accused of misconduct and violation of the constitution by, among others, amassing wealth in questionable ways.
