Freshly minted 800m Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi on Thursday night produced yet another blistering run to beat his arch-rival Marco Arop of Canada in a rematch at a Diamond League meet in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Wanyonyi pressed the gas pedal in the final stretch to win the race in 1 minute, 41.11 seconds —the world’s fastest since David Rudisha ran the world record of 1:40.91 in the 2012 Olympic final in London.

The triumph came hot on the heels for the 20-year-old sensation who held off his usual suspect Arop to win the Paris title in 1:41.19 to keep the country’s stranglehold in the distance at the Olympics.

World champion Arop, who was keen to get one up on Wanyonyi after the Paris defeat, faded off to finish second but this time with a more sizeable margin clocking 1:41.72, while France’s Gabriel Tual secured third place with 1:42.30.

In the corresponding women’s 800m, world champion Mary Moraa returned to the track strongly following her bronze medal at Paris Games, to win in a dominant display.

Moraa showed her opponents a clean pair of heels as she blazed down in the final 200m to clinch victory in 1:57.91 ahead of Great Britain’s Georgia Bell and her compatriot Rekkie Jemma respectively.

Her good Diamond League form continued as she had won in Doha in May before a second-place finish at the Prefontaine Classic, the Eugene Diamond League, the same month.

The jaw-dropping display also saw the youngster break the Diamond League record (DLR), meeting record (MR), and in the process registering personal best (PB) time.

In the men’s 1500m, Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen pulled away from American Cole Hocker -- 3:27.83 to 3:29.85 -- in a matchup of the last two Olympic gold medalists.

Kenya’s Reynold Cheruiyot and Brain Komen placed fourth and fifth respectively as the country’s struggle in the distance continued.

African champion Komen and 2020 Tokyo Games silver medallist Timothy Cheruiyot blanked in the 1500m final at Paris Olympics after the duo finished outside the medal bracket while Reynold failed to qualify for the final.

Komen placed last in 3:35.59 with compatriot Cheruiyot (3:31.35) finishing just ahead of him in the race won by American Cole Hocker.

Also clinching victory in Lausanne was Olympic champion and African record holder Letsile Tebogo of Botswana who won the 200m in 19.64 seconds, prevailing by 14 hundredths over American Erriyon Knighton.

The Diamond League season continues Sunday with a meet in Poland.
