Embakasi East MP Babu Owino now says that he is open to joining President William Ruto’s Cabinet if he publicly announces that education is free.
Speaking on Wednesday evening, Babu who was responding to a question from Kenyans said the directive should cut across all levels including Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.
He went on to say that the President himself is a product of free education, explaining that when Ruto was undertaking his undergraduate at the University of Nairobi, the government gave him and all other students grants, in the 1980s.
“The only condition I can take a CS Education position in Ruto's government is if he agrees to make Education free. Why? Because President Ruto is a product of free education... From Primary to Secondary and University,” Babu said on Citizen TV.
He further noted that if President Ruto does his work and delivers his promises to the people, he will have no problem supporting him.
The legislator, however, cautioned that should he fail, it is his job as a member of parliament to keep him in check.
“If Ruto works today, I have no problem supporting him, if he doesn’t work it is my role as a member of the National Assembly to keep him in check, to ensure that he delivers.”
Babu also talked about his performance as an MP after an Infotrak poll ranked him the best overall among the 290 members of the National Assembly.
He had a score of 72 per cent and was followed closely by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro at 71 per cent.
The MP said during the interview that he looks forward to improving on the 72 per cent rating because it means he still has work to do.
He also talked about his ambitions of becoming Nairobi Governor in the 2027 general elections where he is seeking to replace Sakaja.
“We might differ ideologically but nothing personal and we differ because I am also a resident of Nairobi who expects services, who pays taxes in Nairobi and should be served by the Governor like any other Nairobian.”
