Siaya: Family seeks help to retrieve the body of their kin who drowned 17 days ago

A family in Siaya County is seeking help to retrieve the body of their kin who drowned in River Nzoia 17 days ago.

Relatives have been gathering at the home of Thomas Konyango, in Sigweng Karuoth village, Siaya County.

They come to console his family and wait for the retrieval of the body of his wife.

The family of Irene Apondi believe that she met her untimely death on the banks of River Nzoia some two weeks ago…According to her family, Irene had gone to her farm located near the river.

The family says they found her clothes by the riverside, leading them to believe she may have attempted to bath in the fast-flowing, flooded river when the currents got too strong for her.

This was during the heavy rain season that caused many water bodies to flood and rivers to break their banks.

For the last seventeen days, this family has been carrying out extensive searches along the length and breadth of the river with no sight of her body.

“Watoto washa jaribu, tumejaribu, lakini tumeshindwa,” said her sister Helida Juma.

Miriam Otieno, her daughter adds: “The search has been going on but yesterday and today we haven’t done anything, because we don’t have funds.

Indeed that search has not been a cheap affair; every day, the family has to hire a boat and pay divers at the cost of Ksh.11,000.

Police say they will help with the search once the water levels subside.

For now the family, financially drained can only hope that the water levels fall to enable the search for their loved one to continue and enable them to give her a proper sendoff.
