Oga Obinna Opens Up on Reason Shalkido Had Nicknamed Him Chairman of Single Mothers

Comedian and media personality Oga Obinna has opened up on new details surrounding his final conversations with the late Gengetone artiste Shalkido, revealing that the former Sailors Gang member had nicknamed him Chairman of Single Mothers shortly before his untimely death.

Speaking during an interview with Kenyan YouTubers on Thursday, October 9, 2025, Obinna said that before the accident that claimed Shalkido’s life, the two had been working on a heartfelt song titled Single Mothers, which was meant to celebrate the strength of women who raise children on their own.

The idea for the song, he explained, was inspired by Shalkido’s own childhood story and his admiration for his grandmother, who had brought him up after being abandoned by his mother.

“He also sent me screenshots of people who were talking about a song we were to do together called Single Mothers. He had even nicknamed me Chairman of Single Mothers. Shalkido used to tell me that he was raised by his grandmother and that she was the one who brought him up, so he wanted us to do a song that celebrated single mothers. He even sang the song to me and had already found a producer,” Obinna shared.

According to Obinna, the Wamlambez hitmaker had received about Ksh30,000 from him, part of which he had been advised to use for his upkeep.

However, Shalkido instead channelled most of the money into recording music.

He spent about Ksh8,000 at a studio along Kenyatta Road, paying a producer who was helping him bring the Single Mothers project to life.

“Shalkido was given money, and I told him to give Omosh a certain amount. I think we gave him around thirty thousand. It was not the day before he died, no. He went to the studio and used some of it to pay for the recording, about eight thousand. He wanted to record a song, and I told him to slow down,” Obinna said, recalling the artiste’s commitment to his craft even when he was struggling financially.

He further explained that the rest of the money, about Ksh20,000, was sent to Shalkido’s wife and child, as the artiste often spoke of his small family and his responsibilities towards them.

Obinna said he had tried to advise the singer to take things easy and focus on his well-being, but Shalkido was deeply driven by his passion for music and his desire to tell stories that resonated with people.

“We were giving him the money for survival, but he used it for music. The rest, around twenty thousand, he sent to his wife because he said he had a wife and a child. I told him to slow down and let us figure out what was important,” Obinna added.

The comedian emotionally recounted that Shalkido had given him the weird nickname because of their plan to collaborate on the track, which he now wants to see released posthumously in honour of the late artiste.

He appealed to the producer who had been working with Shalkido to reach out so that they could finalise and release the song as a tribute to his memory.

“To that producer, please, if you can hear me, reach out to me so that we can find a way to release that song for him. Shalkido told me the producer is based along Kenyatta Road.”

Heartbreak

Obinna further lamented how the tragedy has left him heartbroken, especially as he reflects on the plans and dreams they had discussed.

“Now, when I look at all these things that have happened, it leaves a very sad moment in my space. When I am alone, I wonder, oh life, you make plans, and then everything changes,” he said.

Shalkido died following a grisly motorbike accident that left him in critical condition.

The artiste, who had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, passed away on the evening of Monday, October 6, 2025.

The news of his death was confirmed by his family in a heartbreaking video shared on TikTok, where his cousin, standing beside the singer’s father, told fans that doctors had just informed them that Shalkido had succumbed to his injuries at around 6:30 p.m.

The accident occurred just hours after Shalkido had performed at Obinna’s event in Thika. Obinna said they had parted ways early that morning, with the artiste choosing to ride his motorbike back to Nairobi.
