Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed the National Transport and Safety Authority to launch a private vehicles crackdown of those operating as PSVs.
Speaking at the National Delegates Council Meeting at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) , Murkomen has said that most private vehicles are operating as Passenger Service Vehicles (PSVs) without authorisation.
During a metting attended by Matatu Owners Association, Murkomen insisted that if the private vehicles want to operate as public means of transport, they should follow PSV procedures, pay inspection fees and necessary taxes as required by the law.
Murkomen warned those who board private vehicles as a public means of transport that they will suffer the consequences if found in the vehicles by authorities.
“As a Kenyan before you board any vehicle, first make sure the car you are boarding is a PSV. Otherwise, once we catch you, you’ll be left stranded wherever the car will be found.”
According to Murkomen, vehicles notorious for this tendency are Probox, Voxy and Sienta who he said should be registered to the Matatu Owners Association as members who operate PSVs.
Statistically according to the CS, the private vehicles carry more people than they are required to and because in most cases they are not inspected, they cause the most accidents.
This he said causes more accidents on kenyan roads due to overload as compared to PSVs who operate under the guidelines of their associations. Therefore, Murkomen said that starting tomorrow, there will be Implementation of the said directive to curb this vice.
