Test confirms Shell V-Power fuel meets standard amid questions by customers

An independent laboratory test commissioned by Vivo Energy Kenya has confirmed that Shell V-Power meets global standards after a viral video showed otherwise.

The testing, which was conducted by Intertek Testing Services, a globally accredited laboratory, confirmed Shell V-Power in Kenya fully meets the intended Research Octane Number (RON) of 95.

For example, a Shell V-Power test on Limuru Road Service Station found that the fuel met the right RON of 95.1, Woodridge Service Station RON of 96, Lavington Service Station RON of 95.9, among others.

Vivo Energy Kenya, the exclusive distributor and marketer of Shell fuels and lubricants in Kenya, launched an investigation after a post went viral on social media channels questioning the quality of Shell V-Power fuel at select service stations.

“Shell V-Power is imported exclusively via designated cargo ships with certified RON of 95, a refinery property that cannot be altered,” Vivo Energy Kenya announced on the X platform.

“Upon arrival in Kenya our fuel undergoes independent laboratory testing to verify its quality before distribution.”

Data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) shows that Vivo is the leading oil marketing company (OMC) in Kenya with 22.24 percent market share, followed by Rubis (15.56 percent) and Total Energies (15.06 percent) as of June last year.

“Daily tests for water content, density, appearance, and colour at both depots and at every Shell service station safeguard consistency and purity of our products,” Vivo added.

“As a leader in fuel quality assurance, Vivo Energy Kenya has made significant investments in RON testing machines at both our Nairobi and Mombasa laboratories, ensuring our products consistently meet the required standards.”

“Additionally, our Mobile Testing Laboratory travels across the country, conducting independent spot tests at Shell service stations nationwide to uphold our stringent standards.”
