Absa Bank Opens Dubai Office To Channel Gulf Capital Into African Markets

Absa Group has opened an office in Dubai as the lender seeks to strengthen trade and investment flows between Middle Eastern markets and Africa.
The office, located at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), will target corporates, institutional investors and financial institutions in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), providing them with access to Absa’s corporate and investment banking services across African markets.
The expansion is part of the group’s international corridor strategy, which seeks to connect global sources of capital with investment and trade opportunities on the continent, particularly in infrastructure, energy, logistics, agriculture and fast-moving consumer goods.
Absa Bank Limited’s Dubai branch received a Category 4 license from the Dubai Financial Services Authority, effective July 15, 2026, allowing it to arrange investment deals, advise on financial products and arrange and advise on credit.
The license enables the branch to engage eligible clients on the group’s corporate and investment banking offerings, leveraging its existing network across African markets.
Absa Bank Kenya Chief Executive Officer Yusuf Omari said the expansion would create additional opportunities for Kenyan businesses seeking international markets and financing.
“As Kenya continues to strengthen its position as a regional business hub, Absa’s presence in Dubai opens new doors for our customers,” said Omari.
“Whether it is an SME seeking new markets, a corporate expanding its footprint, or an individual looking to do business and invest internationally, this corridor creates greater access to capital, trade and opportunity.”
The move comes as Gulf-based investors increasingly explore opportunities in African economies, with sectors such as infrastructure, energy and agriculture requiring significant long-term capital.
Absa’s Corporate and Investment Banking Chief Executive Zaid Moola said the Dubai office would strengthen the lender’s ability to connect businesses with financing and market expertise across the two regions.
The bank said its presence in Dubai would also enable it to engage investors closer to their headquarters while connecting them with local market specialists who understand the regulatory and commercial environments in individual African countries.
Absa International Chief Executive Cheryl Buss said investment decisions required more than access to capital, pointing to the importance of local market knowledge and established business relationships.
“For Middle Eastern-based businesses and investors looking towards Africa, the challenge is often understanding how an opportunity translates into a viable business decision,” said Clinton Clarke, Senior Executive Officer of Absa Bank Limited’s DIFC Branch.
The lender says the expansion strengthens its international presence while maintaining its focus on African markets, where it intends to support cross-border financing, investment and commercial partnerships.
