"Sijapata Mtu": Wilbroda Says Societal Pressure to Marry Does Not Change Her Choice to Stay Single

Actress and radio personality Jacquey Nyaminde, alias Wilbroda, has opened up about her decision to remain single, insisting that societal pressure and public commentary will not influence her personal choices.

Speaking during an interview with the Mic Cheque podcast on Sunday, August 31, 2025, she shared her perspective on relationships, marriage, and the expectations often placed on women in Africa.

Wilbroda revealed that, despite repeated comments from people suggesting she should get married, she has no intention of entering a traditional marital relationship.

“I honestly imagine that I do not want to get married. Truly. Sometimes I hear people saying, ‘Oh, you are getting older, you will not get married.’ But I do not want to get married. I am just fine as I am,” she said.

She explained that the idea of living with someone, sharing a bed, and adjusting to everyday routines with a partner does not appeal to her.

For her, the thought of enduring snoring, shared spaces, and constant proximity is unappealing, and she prefers maintaining her independence.

“Me, I cannot sleep with someone in one bed. I just imagine now, every day, for the rest of my life, I am just there sleeping next to someone, and he keeps snoring. No. If that is the case, let each one stay in their own home; maybe we meet on weekends,” she added.

She also touched on the concept of partnership without marriage, acknowledging that in some countries, couples maintain separate homes and meet occasionally.

However, even in such arrangements, she remains cautious, noting that she has grown accustomed to spending significant time alone and does not want casual affairs or forced cohabitation.

“If I were to get someone, I do not think I would want us to be in a traditional marriage; I would want us to just be something like partners. I know, it may not make much sense, especially here in Africa.

I do not know if there are people who live like that. But I know people, especially from other countries, who just have partners, nothing more than that. And they live in separate homes, each with their own,” Wilbroda added.

Wilbroda highlighted the pressure African women often face from society to marry, with some people going so far as to suggest that she may never be married if she does not conform.

Despite this, she affirmed that her personal contentment and autonomy take precedence over public opinion.

“And now I have gotten so used to being alone for such a long time, to the extent that I do not want to be in an affair.”
