Several injured as Guardian bus overturns on Kisii-Kaplong Road to Avoid Head-On Collision

Several people were injured when a Guardian bus veered off the road and overturned along the Kisii-Kaplong road on Sunday, April 27.

According to witnesses, the bus was attempting to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming lorry when the driver swerved and lost control.

Reports indicate the bus driver, who was overtaking another vehicle, suddenly encountered the lorry and swerved sharply to the right, causing the bus to roll over.

The bus was ferrying passengers to various destinations across Kisii County, with the final stop being Nyamarambe in Gucha South Sub-County.

Good Samaritans quickly responded, helping to evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals, including Sotik Sub-County Hospital.

Police officers are currently processing the scene amid fears that some survivors may have sustained serious injuries.

Witnesses confirmed that no fatalities occurred during the Sunday morning crash, though several passengers suffered significant injuries from the impact.

This incident is the latest in a series of accidents reported along the Kisii-Kaplong road, a stretch that has witnessed a worrying spike in traffic mishaps in recent months.

In March, two separate accidents involving a matatu and a private vehicle claimed five lives, prompting calls for enhanced road safety measures.

Authorities have since pledged increased traffic patrols and stricter enforcement of speed limits along the road to curb the rising cases of road carnage.

There have been calls to expand the Kisii-Sotik road, which is said to be narrow, resulting in several accidents as drivers lack space to manoeuvre in case of head-on collisions.

The government last year promised that it would look into re-designing the road to enhance the safety of commuters.

However, budget constraints have forced the government to delay the plans, with local leaders appealing for the road's prioritisation once the economy improves.
