Ruto Flies Out To Washington DC After President Trump's Invitation

President William Ruto has flown out of the country on another diplomatic trip, this time to Washington, D.C. in the United States.

The president's departure was confirmed on Tuesday, December 2 by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, who revealed that Ruto had departed at the invitation of President Donald Trump to witness the signing of the historic DRC-Rwanda Peace Agreement.

The signing event will be attended by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the two figures at the heart of the deal.

"At the invitation of President Donald J. Trump, President William Ruto departs this afternoon for Washington, D.C., in the U.S.A. to join President Paul Kagame and President Félix Tshisekedi in witnessing the official signing of the DRC-Rwanda Peace Agreement; the most significant breakthrough in addressing decades of conflict in Eastern DRC," a statement from State House read.

The agreement between the DRC and Rwanda marks a major breakthrough in resolving conflict in Eastern DRC which has persisted for decades, with the new deal set to build on earlier peace efforts which took place in Nairobi and Luanda as well as the joint EAC-SADC initiative.

The agreement is expected to pave the way for disarmament, demobilisation and reintegraton of armed groups while improving humanitarian access to foster regional stability, particularly in the East and Central African region.

Through the Nairobi and Luanda peace processes, Kenya played a pivotal role as the broader East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) initiatives.

During the Washington visit, Ruto is also set to pursue strategic interests in trade, investment, health cooperation and security. According to the communique, the Head of State will witness the signing of the Kenya-U.S Health Cooperation Framework, which transitions a 25-year partnership into a sustainable government-led model aimed at strengthening Universal Health Coverage.

During his time in the US, Ruto is also set to highlight Kenya's economic transformation agenda, which focuses on human capital development, infrastructure expansion, agro-industrial growth, and large-scale irrigation through dam construction.

Notably, the president will also seek Public-Private Partnership (PPP) investment in priority sectors while promoting initiatives to enhance security.
