Traders Count Losses After Fire Rips Through Gikomba Market

A major fire ripped through Nairobi's Gikomba Market in the early hours of Sunday, destroying several business premises and dealing yet another blow to traders at one of Kenya's largest open-air markets.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the blaze broke out at around 4:00 a.m., quickly engulfing stalls and merchandise as traders watched helplessly.

"A major fire has been reported at Gikomba Market, affecting several business premises. The fire is believed to have started at around 4:00 a.m. and has caused significant damage, with response efforts ongoing," the humanitarian agency said in a statement posted on X.

The Red Cross added that it had deployed teams to the scene, working alongside a multi-agency response unit to contain the fire and assess the needs of those affected.

Videos and images circulating online show thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the Nairobi skyline as intense flames tear through sections of the market, with emergency responders battling to bring the situation under control.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes, as heavy traffic disruptions are expected along Landhies Road, Kamukunji, Majengo, and adjoining roads.

Authorities have stressed the need to keep access clear for fire engines, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles.

Traders, residents, and visitors in the surrounding neighbourhoods have been urged to prioritise their safety and follow instructions from emergency personnel on the ground.
