Do you ever catch yourself agonising over the smallest choices—like what to wear to an event or what to order on Uber Eats—until the decision leaves you feeling anxious and mentally drained?
That might be a sign you’re an overthinker.
Overthinking often disguises itself as careful planning, but in reality, it’s a cycle of repetitive and unproductive thoughts that cloud your judgment and disrupt your daily life.
This constant analysis fuels anxiety and stress, keeping your mind in a state of alertness that is both exhausting and unsustainable.
In many cases, it even leads to decision paralysis, where you’re so overwhelmed by the options that making a choice feels impossible.
The effects can become more severe over time.
Overthinking can interfere with sleep, causing insomnia and fatigue, and if left unchecked, it may contribute to feelings of helplessness and heighten the risk of depression.
At its core, overthinking is often driven by perfectionism or a fear of uncertainty.
Brides, for example, are notorious for over-analysing every detail of their weddings in the hope of controlling what can never be fully controlled.
The behaviour usually takes two main forms: dwelling on past mistakes or catastrophising about worst-case scenarios in the future.

Managing this mental habit takes deliberate and consistent effort.
Practising mindfulness, observing your thoughts without judgment, and gently guiding your focus back to the present, can help create distance between you and the thought patterns that hold you hostage.
Another useful approach is cognitive reframing, where you challenge yourself to distinguish between thoughts grounded in fact and those based on fear or assumption.
