Cabinet Secretary nominee for the Ministry of Labour Alfred Mutua has placed his net worth at Ksh462 million.
Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Sunday, August 4, 2024, Mutua told the Members of Parliament (MPs) that his wealth increased by Ksh42 million from the time he was first appointed CS over two years ago.
In 2022, when he faced the Committee on Appointments, Mutua placed his net worth at Ksh420 million.
Mutua said he amassed his wealth through assets like homes, land, farming, and businesses. He, however, did not give specifics on each of the ventures.
“Mr. Speaker, my net worth stands at Ksh462 million, made of assets that I have like homes, land where I do some farming, and a few businesses that I have,” Mutua stated.
Nonetheless, Mutua noted some significant appreciation in the land value by close to 9-10 per cent which contributed to the increase in his net worth within 21 months by Ksh42 million.
At the same time, Mutua used the chance to defend why President William Ruto shuffled him into different ministries in under two years.
If approved by the Parliament Committee on Appointment, Mutua will have served in three different ministries in under two years.
Mutua stated that Ruto moved him due to his ability to adapt faster to different assignments. Initially, Mutua was moved from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Tourism before being dismissed.
“When I look at the thinking behind the President moving me from one ministry to the next, it is because I move in and, in a very chap chap manner, I am able to enact processes that are able to grow the system,” Mutua said.
The nominee likened his reshuffling through various dockets to that of the late minister John Michuki, who served in various ministries in a short time.
Michuki served in the Ministry of Transport between 2003-2005, moved to the Ministry of Internal Security and Provincial Administration between 2005-2007, and moved to the Ministry of Roads and Public Works in 2008, in which he also held the Ministry of Finance and that of Environment.
