Rapper Khaligraph Jones has admitted that he had lost faith in the current political and ruling class, who are often accused of overburdening ordinary Kenyans with taxes, engaging in corruption, and ignoring their plight.

However, Jones now says that the Gen Z movement has reignited his hope for change, showing that unity among the people can pressure those in power to act responsibly.

When Kenyans took to social media to urge MPs not to pass the controversial Finance Bill 2024, some ruling coalition MPs arrogantly vowed to pass it as the President desired, which they did. However, it was the actions of the Gen Zs that ultimately pressured the President to refuse to assent to the bill, sending it back to Parliament.

Unlike previous protests in Kenya, the Gen Z protests that began in Nairobi sparked a nationwide uprising. For the first time in history, protesters invaded the Parliament building to express their displeasure when the bill was passed. This unprecedented event forced MPs to flee for their lives into ambulances and bunkers, fearing the angry protesters.

Jones says these events have given him hope that change is possible in the country.

“Advocacy for change has been around for a long time, and there have always been protests, but this time, Gen Z changed the usual pattern, which is a very good thing. Honestly, I had lost hope, but then Gen Z revived it. When they began the protests, I wasn’t really sure if they were serious because of what we have seen in the past. But then I realized they were not relenting, and the movement was growing stronger every day and yielding results. I am just happy to see what has happened, and I am grateful to the Gen Zs. I had long waited to see such an action,” Omollo, aka Jones, said.

The rapper is glad to have witnessed such a revolution, which, unlike others, had no single leader but was instead a collective effort of concerned Kenyans tired of being oppressed by their government.
