30 Nairobi residents were arrested for urinating and littering in the Central Business District (CBD) as part of the county government's crackdown on minor offences.
Led by Nairobi's Environment chief officer Geoffrey Mosiria, the county's enforcement teams patrolled selected streets in CBD to nab unsuspecting Kenyans who violated the law.
Nairobi Public Nuisance Act 2021 states that anyone caught urinating or defecating in a public place is liable to a Ksh.10,000 fine, six-months jail term or both.
Further, the county officials ordered street vendors to clean up their heaps of trash and discard them accordingly.
30 offenders were arrested on Monday night and arraigned in a city court on Tuesday which ordered them to serve community services at public facilities.
This involved cleaning City Mortuary and Uhuru Park which is yet to be opened to the public since the anti-government protests.
Mosiria confirmed that the county had recruited more personnel to assist them in arresting those involved in the crime.
He welcomed the move to punish the offenders through community service, urging all Nairobi residents to take care of the environment.
"In a move to clean and make our city green yesterday 30 people were arrested urinating in CBD. The court has given them a community service order to clean our Nairobi funeral home (city mortuary). We must keep our environment clean," he said.
"Our Nairobi today is not what it was before, and currently, everyone should take care of the environment. It is very wrong for people to urinate and dump garbage anywhere within the Central Business District (CBD).
