Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has died, the family has confirmed.
The former IEBC boss had been admitted to a hospital in Nairobi where he had been undergoing treatment for nearly a week.
Chebukati died at 11 pm on Thursday.
The Former IEBC boss had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.
What Chebukati was ailing from remains private.
Chebukati served as IEBC chair for a full term of six years and retired in January 2023.
He presided over the 2017 and 2022 General Elections.
Earlier reports indicated that the hospitals asked the family to decide of whether to switch off the life-support machines.

Chebukati Career
Chebukati was a Kenyan Lawyer with interest in corporate governance.
He founded the Cootow and Associates Advocates law in Nairobi in 2006.
He contested for the Saboti Constituency parliamentary seat in 2007 on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket but lost.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Chebukati as IEBC Chairperson on a six-year tenure in January 2017.
Wafula Chebukati officially retired on January 17, 2023, after six years at the helm of the electoral commission.
He oversaw three Kenyan elections during his tenure as chair.
This included the hotly contested 2017 general election, the October 2017 repeat presidential election and the 2022 general elections.
Education
Chebukati had a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Nairobi (UoN).
He attended Lenana High School before joining UoN.
He also held a master’s degree in business administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
Chebukati was a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), the Institute of Certified Secretaries, and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Wife & Family
He was Mary Wanyonyi’s husband – Mary is the current Chairperson of the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA).
Mary served in the Ministry of Lands and Physical planning as the Senior Deputy Accountant General.
She has also worked at the Ministry of Treasury as the Director General in charge of Accounting and Quality Assurance and Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (PSASB).
Additionally, she served in various boards in institutions, including the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Maasai Mara University and the Co-operative University of Kenya.

The accountant holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce and a master’s in business administration.
Chebukati and Mary had three children.
Among them are firstborn daughter Rachel Chebukati, second born son Jonathan Chebukati, and lastborn son Emmanuel.
